Blondie's Radio show gets meta with real life superstars

Blondie Meets Abbott and Costello 3-12-44

Abbott and Costello were a popular comedy team from the 1940s to early 1950s. They started on stage and went to radio and movies. They were the biggest money makers of 1941. They had a television show in the early 1950s.

This show is primarily Abbott and Costello’s show. This shows blends real and fantasy as Abbott and Costello were real performers. Blondie and Dagwood in character have a walk on part about half way through their show.

During World War 2, the country had big drives to recycle rubber, paper and other materials. In this show, Blondie and Dagwood assist with a paper drive. They accidentally take the next script for Abbott and Costello’s show.

Abbott and Costello find Blondie and the script so they offer her a part in their show. There is a kissing scene in the script with Costello and Blondie. Dagwood doesn’t like that scene. Costello likes it and moreso how it bothers Dagwood.

Dagwood asks Blondie to leave the show. Costello continues to needle Dagwood.

Here are a few laughs that hold up. Jealousy is timeless.

Arthur Lake played Dagwood for years and continued to do so to the end.

Penny Singleton who originated the role was still playing Blondie here.
