Mix Tape's History Remix

Two Blondie Radio Shows

I’ve been reading and looking into the history of Blondie comics to understand how this comic lasted over 75 years. I found some old radio shows on the web and listened to them. This is what it was like:

Blondie and Society May 1945

Social clubs were a thing in the 1940s and 1950s, especially in radio and tv shows. If you watch shows from then they had Racoon Lodges and The Moose Club. I’ve never seen these clubs, but they were on shows.

Blondie wants to be part of a social club. This particular club is highbrow and proper. Blondie has to present the best version of her family to get in. As anyone could predict, Dagwood screams a lot at nothing. Their son gets in a fight. Cora Dithers wants to be part of this club, so she arrives unexpectedly.

The story starts slow. When the confusion starts, the show gets funny. The radio stars the voices of Penny Singleton and Arthur Lake.

This may be a cliche 1940s episode. There is slight humor and it goes fast. Like the comic strip.

Blondie Plumbing Problems July 21, 1944

Dagwood tries to be a know it all. He isn’t. Blondie says “we can’t afford to have you fix it.” That translates from the comics to radio and later movies. Dagwood is a buffoon and a glutton. He says that he is going to fix something, you can see the disaster coming.

One plumber laughs at Blondie when she asks if he’ll be right over. Cliche plumber jokes.

By the end, Dagwood’s boss ends up trying to help the next plumber the Bumsteads get. Why Dagwood’s boss? Why not?

There’s confusion, flirting and silliness in the episode.

Have these plots been done to death by now? Were these trite at the time? I can’t tell.
