Another Great Band not in the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame

The band, War had some of the most famous songs of the 1970s. “Why Can’t we be Friends” “Low Rider” “Me and Baby Brother” “Summer”

Fifty years later, some of their songs are used in current movies and commercials.

There are hundreds of blogs and podcasts about bands not in the Hall of Fame. There are just as many blogs about who is in the Hall and no one knows why.

I’m going to add my opinion to the topic. War should’ve been in the Hall years ago.

They say to get in the Hall, the artist has to made a cultural impact. Here are some ways music was impacted.

War was a multicultural band. Sly and the Family Stone were a multicultural group also. That was also Sly Stone’s band with talented musicians no matter their race. All of War’s members wrote the songs. There were main songwriters but everyone had their chance.

Second reason for War in the hall, Members of War start playing their mix of urban rock, soul and funk in the early 1960s, but they all come together in 1969. Miles Davis releases  “Bitches Brew” which was known for its fusion of jazz and funk and rock.

In 1969, Blood Sweat and Tears have three Top 10 singles with a pop and jazz fusion. Chicago release their first album. All mix jazz with pop. War also jammed and improvised and they mixed in Latin rhythm and rock. Only Chicago and Miles Davis is in the Hall of Fame.

Sales aren’t a big requirement according to Hall requirements, but it seems to be. War had 9 Gold albums and two platinum. Six singles went gold. They continue to get stream plays on modern media.

War were big in the 1970s but they reunited and came back in the 1990s and had gold selling records. They weren’t a flash in the pan. They transcended their first era.

Lee Oskar has a special brand of harmonica. His opening of “Low Rider” is a must for harmonica players to learn. The riff is so memorable that you don’t have to be a good harmonica player to make it recognizable. (Trust me).
