Mix Tape's History Remix

What Do you a band like Southern Culture on the Skids would be like?

When you heard a band is called “Southern Culture on the Skids” what did you think they would be like?

I first heard of them from a radio show that broadcast from Princeton called “Rockabilly Roadhouse.” The show played country, rock, wrestling intro music. It was a fun commute home when the show was on.

Southern Culture were one of the bands the radio show played. Southern Culture formed in 1983. It would be years before they found cult status success. “Camel Walk” is silly and amusing but had a killer rockabilly melody. The lead singer talk-sings through the song so anyone can sing along. It is also a good advertisement for Little Debby snack cakes. The other song played a lot was “Viva Del Santo.” Del Santo was a Mexican professional wrestler. Again silly and fun and easy to sing along with.

Their other songs are just as wild, “Daddy was a Preacher and Momma was. Go-Go Girl.” “White Trash” “Liquored Up and Lacoured Down.” “Fried Chicken and Gasoline.” The titles sometimes were more outlandish than the actual songs.

Their major songs were released in the early part of the century. Guess what, they are still together. It never stopped being fun or funny. When that is your work, it makes them happy and us.

I checked there are tour dates on their website.
